DISTRICT PROFILE

 Tamenglong Profile

Tamenglong district has the distinction of having the first Sub Divisional office/HQs in Manipur Hills from the time of British India since 1919. It also has the distinction of being connected with the outside world through old Cachar road linking Manipur with the rest of the country while most of the hill districts were not connected then. It became a full fledged district in 1969 when the first DC was posted. It was then known as Manipur West District. Today it is known as Tamenglong District with 4 (four) Sub-Divisions which are co-terminus with Blocks.

Communication

The Road coverage in the district is very poor by any standard.  Presently only NH-53 running between Imphal and Jiribam/Silchar having some 200 kms and Tamenglong Khongsang road (39.5 kms) happen to be the only two roads which is opened/motorable round the year. Even this is so with maintenance left much wanting. The following facts/data clearly shows the picture of communication/road status. Out of 242 Villages/Settlements the following shows the Picture of Communication/roads status. It may be pointed out here that within the district also there is considerable disparity. For instance 56.338 % villages of Nungba sub-division is not covered by any road at all whereas in Tamei sub-division  59.615% villages are without any road.
