BRIEF NOTE ON THE HISTORY AND ESTABLISHMENT OF 5th BN, MANIPUR RIFLES, KHONGJARON, TAMENGLONG
The 5th Bn. Manipur Rifles was raised on 19th February, 1972 vide the Government of Manipur (Home) Department orders No. 5/38/72-POL(2)(A) dated 11th December, 1972 with its Bn. Head Quarter at Pangei. The first batch of 600 Riflemen appointed were given basic training at MPTC, Pangei and passed out on 27th December, 1973.

The Bn. Was shifted to Uchathol, Jiribam in December 1980 and it took over posts along N.H. 53 (now NH-37) at Noney, Nungba, Barak, Makru, Awangkhul and Irang from the 10th Bn. Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC).

Once again the Bn. was shifted to District HQs, Tamenglong from Uchathol, Jiribam in 1984, but there was no infrastructure at Tamenglong District Head Quarter. The land was acquired at Khongjaron and in pursuance PHQ orders No. 8/44/83/2938 dated 09th June, 1987, the Bn. was shifted to Khongjaron in July, 1987.

3.    Nature of duty:

The 5th Bn. Manipur Rifle is armed battalion of Manipur Police. The main purpose of duty is providing armed security and assists Civil Police in  maintaining Law and  Order:

a)      Law and Order duty.

b)      VIP security.

c)      Armed security to dignitaries/ protected persons.

d)      Bn. Security.

e)      Vital installation security.

f)      CI. Operation etc.

4.   Area of Jurisdiction of the Battalion:

There is no specific area of jurisdiction. The area of responsibility is given by PHQ from time to time as per nature of deployment of man power. At present 5MR personnel are providing  security to VIPs/ Officials/ Vital installation.

1.       5MR Rear HQ C/2MR, Imphal

2.       Guard cum Escort to VIP-1No.

3.       Guard cum Escort to Officials - 2 Nos.

4.       Security guard for Bank - 1 No.

5.       Security guard to treasury Office – 1 No.

6.       National Highway Security (NH – 37) – 1 Post(Tatbung)

7.       Railway Line Construction Security – 15 Posts (from Barak to Jiribam)

5.   Activities and Achievement from August, 2013 to July, 2014:

TRAINING/COURSE:

1.       Basic Training:           20 personnel undergoing training at MPTC, Pangei.

2.       Capsule Course:       3 personnel trained in Handling Weapon at MPTC, Pangei.

3.       Course  Inside Manipur:

a.   Refresher Training Course: One month rotational Refresher Course for 5MR personnel was conducted at Bn. Head Quarter, Khongjaron during June and July, 2014. 

1- Jemander, 6 – Havildar and 18 – Rifle man Total – 25 Personnel attended the course.

4.       Course outside Manipur:

a.      Cyber crime or memory forensic, data recovery, Internet phone, Mobile phone and SIM cloning: 1 – Rifleman at NEPA, Meghalaya

b.      Course of Explosive and Bomb Disposal: 1 – Halvildar at NEPA, Meghalaya

c.      Basic Armourer Course: 1 – Rifleman at NEPA, Meghalaya

d.      Driving and Maintenance Course:  1 – constable Driver at CSMT, BSF, Tekanpur (Gwalior)

5.       Medals and Award:

a.       DGP’s Good Service Mark: 2 Nos. (to 2 Personnel)
