Flora and Fauna

Tamenglong District is blessed with virgin forests, exotic orchids, rare and endangered plants, and wildlife. The forests can be grouped as Tropical-Ever-green forest, Sub-tropical forest and Bamboo brakes.


The luxuriant and varied vegetation in Tamenglong District is due to those factors.Zousiang (uningthou) , ndung (Sahikuhi), mphou (oak), nthaeng (tairen),chongrei (talhao), makou, junh, gaeng (uwah), gaengthing ( semi Uwah), n-ngaih, agau and Aguretc are found. Varieties of cane and bamboo, thatch grass are also abundance. Cinnamon is also found. Others eatable fruits and citrus are wild apple, wild banana, wild cherry, wild walnut, wild mangoes, luikhumthai, Lichi, Passion fruit, neithai, Lemon, Orange and Tachuthai. Medicinal plants are also abound. Mushroom and Morels are found in abundance in the jungle.


The forests are rich in wild-life:

  • Mammals:- Mole, hedgehogs, flying lemur, bats ,monkeys, black monkey, wild pigs, wild boars, pangolin etc. are some of the mammalian fauna found in Tamenglong.

  • Carnivore:- Jackal, sloth-bear or common black bear, tiger etc. are carnivorous animals found in this land. Mongooses, wild cats, martens weasel, elephant, dear, roe, stag are found. The sambar, dear, hog dear, bear, fox, hyena, wild pig, wild dogs, slow Loris, serow are reported. Leopard and tiger are also reported from barak valley area and Tousem area. Migrated herds elephant are sighted in Tousem during winter. Krait, cobra, viper and python are found inside the forest. Large tortoise are found in the zeilad lake. Varieties of cranes, ducks and feal are seen in the zeilad lake. Amur Falcon (local name is Akhuaipuina), the migratory bird visits Tamenglong during the early winter till the last week of November.

    Tamenglong is called as the land of the Hornbill. The great pied Hornbill (Bucerosbiconishomrai), Hiu big and swan Hornbill (Hornbill) and Indian pied Hornbill ( Anthracoceros Malabasicusmalabasicus) species are found.

  • People:- Main tribe inhabited in the District are the Rongmei, Zeme, Liangmai, Inpuimei, Kuki, Chiru, Hmar andKhasi.


The zeliangrong society is an exogamous and patrilineal society. It is divided into 6 (six) major clan mainly Kamei (pamei), Gonmei (Newmai) Gangmei ,Panmei, Riamei and Ruangmei. The marriage within the clan is strictly prohibited and each clan has also a Totem. Ahuina (Green pigeon)is a Totem for Kamei (Pamei), ndaorui (bulbul) is a Totem (bird) for Gonmei (Niumei), Kamang (Tiger) is a Totem ( animal) for Gangmei clan, Gou (Frog) is a Totem for Riamei clan and Ruaingouna (bird) is a Totem for Panmei clan and Agaek (Crow) is a totem for Ruangmei clan.

Types of Marriage:

  1. Khamthan: Negotiated or proper marriage.
  2. Noumangmei: Marriage by service (Probation)
  3. Samtuanmei: Elopement at the will of Boys and Girls (outside the clan).
  4. Noukakhaumei: marriage with his deceased elder brother’s wife to look after the children.
  5. Nousoumei: Forced marriage against the consent/ will of the fiancée who is already engaged or betrothment is made.
  6. Tanpui-TanpuKaomei/Nruanmei: Marriage between close relative by blood within the same clan (Cousin Marriage).
