The District Information Office, Tamenglong known as District Information Unit at its early period was opened in the month of January, 1975 at Tamenglong District H.Q. by attaching it at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Tamenglong under the Department of Information and Public Relations(DIPR), Government of Manipur with a staff of three members only without officer. After a gap of sixty months ,in the year 1980 December, the name of the Office was changed as the present prevailing name “District Information Office” from District Information Unit but the Office was shifted here and there for many years from D.C. Office to the District Officer Club , then to the Telephone Exchange Office Complex, then to the Tamenglong Higher Secondary School, then to the Jadonang park in a private house and after that in another private house at the heart of Tamenglong Town and finally the Office was settled within the Town area to a Central Government run Office Building which was handed over to the Centre but the building was also set on fire by unknown people taking due advantage of the wake of agitation of ANSUM. Now the Centre is running in a tiny State Government Office building with a staff strength of three headed by a D.I.O. with one Reporter and one Grade IV against the sanctioned post of eight to twelve staff members.
The main objective of the Office is to inform the people of the developmental programmes and welfare activities taken and to be taken up by the Government by issuing press releases, press notes and feature articles through the local press and news agencies.
Function
The main function of the Office is to give News Coverage of the VVIP and VIPs’ National and State functions such as Republic Day, Independence Day and other Government routine functions regarding activities and achievements of the Government Departments with a view to focus to the people the same through print and electronic media by disseminating press release and feature articles. Every year the Office has been producing Special Publications entitled “Tamenglong District News Bulletin” on the above mentioned two remarkable National Functions highlighting the various achievements taken up by the Government Departments for the welfare of the people. The Office has been organizing Special Publicity Campaign entitled “ The Government and the People – Interpersonal Communication Campaign on flagship programmes of the Government”. A programme of “7- Day Basic Training in News Reporting” was also launched from the last year 2017 in the sense to impart knowledge of Journalism to the youths. Photo exhibition highlighting the various achievements and activities of the Government has been organizing from time to time.
